Cerebral Artery Segmentation with Level Set Methods

چکیده
In this paper we present the application of two level set methods (active contour without edges and fast marching) to the problem of segmenting arteries from medical images. The two methods fit in the same Hamilton-Jacobi type equation but their underlying mechanisms are quite different. The first method finds the objects of interest using an energy minimization equation without the information of image edges. The second method segments an image by evaluating its time-cross-map, which is calculated from the image gradient. We implement the first method from scratch, and use a medical imaging library (ITK) for the second. Their segmentation results and performances are compared. Each method’s strengths and weaknesses are also analyzed.

A Method for Body Fat Composition Analysis in Abdominal Magnetic Resonance Images Via Self-Organizing Map Neural Network
Introduction: The present study aimed to suggest an unsupervised method for the segmentation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in axial magnetic resonance (MR) images of the abdomen. Materials and Methods: A self-organizing map (SOM) neural network was designed to segment the adipose tissue from other tissues in the MR images. The segmentation of SAT and VA...
متن کاملPartial Differential Equations applied to Medical Image Segmentation
This paper presents an application of partial differential equations(PDEs) for the segmentation of abdominal and thoracic aortic in CTA datasets. An important challenge in reliably detecting aortic is the need to overcome problems associated with intensity inhomogeneities. Level sets are part of an important class of methods that utilize partial differential equations (PDEs) and have been exte...
متن کاملQuantitative Comparison of SPM, FSL, and Brainsuite for Brain MR Image Segmentation
Background: Accurate brain tissue segmentation from magnetic resonance (MR) images is an important step in analysis of cerebral images. There are software packages which are used for brain segmentation. These packages usually contain a set of skull stripping, intensity non-uniformity (bias) correction and segmentation routines. Thus, assessment of the quality of the segmented gray matter (GM), ...
متن کاملAutomatic Level Set Based Cerebral Vessel Segmentation and Bone Removal in CT Angiography Data Sets
Computed tomography angiography (CTA) data sets without hardware based bone subtraction have the disadvantage of containing the bone structures which particularly overlap with vessel intensities; therefore vessel segmentation is hampered. Segmentation methods developed for CTA without bones can not handle these data sets and manual cerebral vessel segmentation is not realizable in clinical rout...
متن کاملIs the serum ferritin level a considerable predictor for hemorrhagic transformation of ischemic stroke?
Background: Hemorrhagic Transformation (HT) of Ischemic Stroke (IS) is a detrimental complication. This study investigated the association between serum ferritin level and HT in patients with massive IS of middle cerebral artery. Methods: Thirty patients with massive IS of middle cerebral artery were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. They were divided into two groups based on...
